DANGER - Toxic Foods and Substances for your New Puppy

Updated: Apr 3, 2024

Dangerous and Toxic For Dogs

Using our common sense, we're all aware that Bleach and similar substances are poisonous to us all .....including our pets, but are you aware of some of the following?

Chocolate: Contains theobromine and caffeine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, seizures, and even death.

Grapes and Raisins: Can lead to kidney failure in dogs, resulting in vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite.

Xylitol: Found in sugar-free gum, candy, and some peanut butter, xylitol can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, and death.

Onions and Garlic: Contains compounds that can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to anaemia, weakness, and gastrointestinal issues.

Macadamia nuts: Can induce weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs.

Avocado: Contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.

Corn on the Cob:  Corn on the cob could potentially be fatal if eaten by your dog. Although the corn is digested by dogs, the cob can cause a blockage in your dog’s intestine.

Cooked Bones:  Giving your dog a raw uncooked bone to chew on is great, but avoid cooked bones at all cost. These can easily splinter and in large quantities cause constipation or at worst, a perforation of the  gut which can be fatal.

Alcohol: Even small amounts can result in intoxication, leading to respiratory depression, coma, and death.

Caffeine: Found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and certain medications, caffeine can cause restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, and tremors in dogs.

Raw dough: Contains yeast, which can expand in a dog's stomach, leading to bloating, discomfort, and potentially dangerous gas build-up.

Salt: Large amounts of salt can lead to sodium ion poisoning, resulting in vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures, and even death.

Fatty foods: Excessive consumption of fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs, leading to vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and lethargy.

Medications: Many human medications, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antidepressants, can be toxic to dogs if ingested.

Household cleaners and chemicals: Products like bleach, detergents, and pesticides can cause irritation, burns, and poisoning if ingested or exposed to a dog's skin or eyes.

It's essential to keep all these items out of your dog's reach and seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect your dog has ingested any potentially toxic substances. Additionally, consult with your veterinarian for more information on keeping your dog safe and healthy.
